The Edit arrived one day, as a rage against ‘stuff’.
Over and over again I saw (and actively participated in) hitting the BUY STUFF NOW button in an attempt to fix ‘problem areas’ around the house. Buying larger and busier in an attempt to reduce the sheer amount of time that you spend putting the damn stuff away.
I had popped over to discuss a light touch design to a client’s kitchen and invariably asked how she used her kitchen day to day. Large plastic automobiles had arrived alongside the existence of her 4 year old daughter and she loathed them.
When I suggested she could rotate toys and keep some/ all in her daughter’s room, the lack of space came up again as due to their second wardrobe being housed in there - there wasn’t any room.
All of a sudden I found myself in her wardrobe, as if we were looking for Narnia.
Between us we worked out that if she simply updated the wardrobe in her own bedroom – which was already on her to-do list - the ‘other’ wardrobe could be removed and VOILA - plastic automobile storage could be moved.
This seemed to be a recurring theme that clients would raise, sticking points and mild - yet daily - irritations that with a bit of spatial tetris could easily be resolved. We still bought a few styling pieces to lift the space however I’m not sure which element she loved more!
