November | So you want to buy a sofa |

Beds, work chairs and sofas - most times - if you're not in one, your on another.

Everyone has seemingly got on board with investing in mattresses, but do you invest in your sofa? Do you know what type to invest in?

What I always ask a client first - how will you use the room?

1. Hallway.

- Barely sitting down here, no back support required apart from a style point of view, narrow seat for max circulation, look for something around 450mm deep. Would look at a higher seat here - around 480mm high so you can get up and down quickly.

2. TV room.

- I would recommend a deep base, possibly 1000mm deep if you can fit it with both back and loose cushions. Seat height could be as low as 440mm high.

3. Formal Lounge.

- Your looking for some foam cushions and fixed seat and back cushions so minimal top up styling is needed. Medium seat depth, as you will be sitting upright more than sprawling - around 600-700mm cushion depth. Look for a seat height between 440-460 mm high.

4. Kitchen.

- This is usually top up seating, and I would only recommend when the shape of the kitchen allows it. This could also be seen as a comfortable dining bench and would need to sit at a comfortable height alongside the table.

5. Bedroom

- Very luxurious when placed at the bottom of a bed. Ensure the bed is tall enough to mask the back of the sofa, so it is framed beautifully from the front but hidden while you are reading in bed/ gazing around - enjoying your beautifully designed room.

The next questions would be - who will use the seat the most? If it's grandparents, a higher seat height looking around the 480mm mark would be easiest however, you are not going to be able to find a sofa that covers all of these uses. Prioritise - what will you do in this room and then who will sit on it the most?
