July | Setting the scene: Ground floor |

One of the first questions any Interior Designer will ask you is: how do you want the space to feel?

Flooring is the easiest and most inexpensive way of zoning different areas and is the foundation of the room.

A hard floor will make the room feel ‘harder’. Imagine walking onto a concrete floor, then imagine walking onto a very plush carpet - the physicality is very different. At Rae Wolf so much consideration goes into making sure the floor finish is perfect, but if you want to DIY it – here are some loose rules you start you off.

Loose Rules

Hallways (enclosed and open plan) – Hard floor due to heavy use.

Stairways – Soft floor, to absorb sound.

Living rooms (enclosed) – Soft floor, to add a level of cosyness.

Living rooms (open plan) – Hard floor, with a rug to create a zone.

Kitchen (enclosed and open plan) – Hard floor, easy to clean.

Dining (enclosed) – Hard floor, easy to clear up.

Dining room (open plan) – Add a patterned rug to create a zone.

So many finishes to choose from!

There is a massive amount of variety out there, a few examples below;

Wood: Engineered or hardwood?

Tile: Porcelain, granite or marble?

Carpet: Short or high pile, loop, wool or composite?

Concrete or Resin?

Painted floor?

Look-a-likes! Lino or vinyl that from a distance and outside of scratching distance look to be their real counterparts.

Pro tips to give you something extra!

  1. One floor finish throughout can link rooms that have been opened up.

  2. If you change the direction of the planks in different sections, it can subtly zone an open plan space.

  3. By adding a rug, can help create a zone.

  4. Always get a sample, as large as you can and lay it on the floor in situ to see how the light effects it.

  5. Coloured edging to a stair runner can provide a safe pop of colour to a neutral carpet.
